With over 250 years of experience in glassmaking, Riedel revolutionized simple glassware when Claus J. Riedel, 9th generation, designed the first collection of varietal-specific stemware in the 1970s. Working with experienced tasters and winemakers, Riedel discovered that wine enjoyed from his glasses showed more depth and better balance. He laid the groundwork for stemware that was purposefully designed as well as beautiful, and made according to the Bauhaus design principle: form follows function. His masterpiece 'Sommeliers' set the precedent for a range of series, designed specifically to enhance the wine's harmony.
Each Riedel in the family's history has contributed to the company's success and driven the brand forward, with new ideas and daring design concepts. Riedel is renowned for quality and purpose, and offers products that are not just glasses but tools for wine enjoyment.VINUM (1986) is Riedel's basic stemmed series. This series was created by Georg J. Riedel, based on the handmade Sommeliers range, in order to make Riedel varietal-specific glassware more accessible to the general consumer. The Vinum Cabernet glass is perfect for full-bodied, complex red wines that are high in tannin. It smooths out the rough edges: emphasizing the fruit, playing down the bitter qualities of the tannin, and allowing wines to achieve a balance that would normally take years of ageing to acquire.
