Emma Stenhouse is an emerging Indigenous Artist on a journey to belonging and becoming more connected with her Ngarrindjeri heritage. Her work is predominantly inspired by nature and connection to country, using elements of contemporary art and traditional iconography. Each piece is braided with learning, a connection between artist and viewer and a continuation of culture, creating a platform for cross-cultural exchange. Growing up in Broken Hill, Outback New South Wales, Emma has a depth of connection to the arid lands of the bush. This is often evident in her use of colours inspired by the red dirt, and the simple concept of nurturing nature to continue its growth and sustainability.
The Artwork's Story as told by Emma:
The star is the spirit of those who shine down upon us. It lights the path forward, shining above the mountains, showing us the way. The mountains represent challenges that loom high before us; it is within us to overcome the challenges with time and perseverance. Things become clear when light shines upon them and so with the help of the mountain star, we find the path and we reach the peak on our own terms.
Emma is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman, with strong links to the Gunditjmara people of Warrnambool. She would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where her artwork was created, the Peek Whuurrong people of the Marr Nation, and pay her respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
