  1. Although the term doonas and quilts in Australia are used interchangeably, there’s actually a slight difference between the two. While quilts have padding that’s encased between layers of fabric, doonas are made of a soft, flat bag that’s filled with feathers, wool or down.

  3. Carefully look at the loft (or density) of your quilt. If you prefer a thick, fluffy quilt, look for a mid to higher loft for those cold winter nights.

  5. Want filling alternatives? Bamboo is an eco-friendly option that has become especially popular for its hypoallergenic qualities. Alpaca wool, meanwhile, is incredibly light and ideal for temperature regulation.
  6. Keep in mind that body temperature can change throughout the night. It might be wise to invest in an all-season quilt made from natural fibres like down, feather, wool or silk, or buy a summer and a winter quilt, so you can alternate as the weather changes.
  7. Style your quilt in subtle ways. Fluff it up and fold it over to make into an extra-thick comforter or pair with a chunky throw blanket casually draped at the end of your bed.
