About the Artwork:
"When I go out hunting I always like to see the colour in the trees, the light, the dark and the bush medicine plants growing on the sand hills. The colours change at sunrise and sunset. I like hunting and seeing my country. I love to paint since childhood. My paintings show my deep love for my country and the beauty I see." The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint altyerr dreaming stories. The artists paint their country where those stories belong.
About the Artists:
The work produced by Artists of Ampilatwatja (pronounced um-blood-a-watch) is unique and recognisably distinct from other Aboriginal artistic communities.
The paintings pay homage to the significance and use of traditional bush medicine, allowing an insight into the community. They depict the traditional knowledge of dreaming and country through the translation of waterholes and soaks, bush medicines, mountains and sand hills.
The artists predominantly paint Arreth (strong bush medicine), demonstrating their deep connection to country. A veritable source of life, the land has provided and sustained Alyawarr people for generations, as every plant and animal has a vital role to play within the ecological system.
The beauty of the Artists of Ampilatwatja emerges from a close association with the land, passed down through generations.
