Sizing small - or incorrect?

I bought these shoes online in my usual size (EU41). When they arrived, the shoes looked quite a bit smaller, and I could only just squeeze them on my foot. The sizing on the inside of the shoe confirmed EU41, as did the sticker on the bottom of the shoe, but when I removed the sticker from the bottom of the shoe, I saw that the rubber sole underneath the sticker gave the size as EU39. I ended up returning them as they were too small. Such as shame as the actual style of the shoe was perfect and exactly what I was after!
