This came with my R50. The discounted kit was cheaper than body only! I already had RP, 24-240, 100-400 and Speedlite III. So I could not see much use for the 'stock kit lens'. Even thought of selling it. Kept it in case I needed the 18mm end and/or closer focusing distances than on my two zooms. Then I bought two extension rings! I now have a very cheap alternative to a dedicated macro lens. Of course not the same quality, but for the number of times I do macro work, this arrangement will do me. So if you want to try macro without having to stake much, you may find one cheap and unused from a kit on a 'second hand' basis. Two quality but inexpensive R series extension rings and you're set. Have some fun. Then you can decide if this will do or what specs you want for a true macro lens. I'd find the 18-45, even on my R50, a bit limiting for my travels. For me the 24-240 suits much better. It's higher IQ and FF. Of course it's a bit heavier (still a lightweight for a superzoom!), and costs more. Funnily its specs and price are very good even on an APS-C body. Notes: 1. This is an RF-S lens, so it can fit my RP but will not cover the whole FF sensor. If you don't have an R series APS-C, it may still be worth it just to try out macro photography before deciding what you want to get for FF. 2. For the specs and quality, it's a bit pricy bought separately new. My value rating is based on lens only price. 3. In a kit, it's worth the extra over body only price. You might also find a camera shop which has split it from a kit and sell it at a reasonable price. My overall rating reflects these buying options. 4. My quality rating is more about its limited specs / usefulness to me than IQ.
