Canon's "nifty-fifty" is popular for a reason. Great value lens that produces beautiful portraits and natural photos in any setting. It's super compact and light, which is great for portability, and versatile enough to carry as your single lens on a day out.

An Affordable Prime with Clear Limitations

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is an inexpensive, compact general-purpose prime and a good second lens for beginners. Image quality is fairly soft at f/1.8, improves slightly at f/2, and becomes nicely sharp by f/2.8. It's slightly sharper than the older EF 50mm f/1.8 STM, especially away from the centre. However, its background rendering is often busy and untidy, producing unattractive bokeh against complicated backgrounds. Image quality also deteriorates at close focusing distances, limiting its usefulness for close-up photography. Its main advantage is an affordable f/1.8 aperture, enabling faster shutter speeds in low light and more control over background blur than typical budget kit zooms. It's a worthwhile upgrade for beginners wanting to explore prime lenses, portraits, and low-light photography, and it can produce pleasing results when used within its limits. However, inconsistent sharpness and uninspiring background rendering make it less suited to demanding professional work. It's a good entry-level prime for the price, but photographers who want consistently high image quality will eventually need something better.
