SHOP THE LOOKS
Style is about much more than clothes. It’s who you are. And no‑one proves that more than Olivia De Jonge, Bella McGoldrick and Guy Vadas. These thinkers, makers and born‑to‑creators don’t just wear their style, they live it. One look at a time.
Actor. Secret embroiderer. Channeller of characters as diverse as Priscilla Presley and Caitlin Atwater.
Olivia De Jonge’s acting CV may be stellar, but she’s still a down‑to‑earth Melbourne girl. We caught up with Olivia to talk style, comfort and the little things that keep her grounded between red carpets and film sets.
MINI OR MAXI?
Maxi, because I love the feeling of it swishing. It feels cooler. You can just relax.
BOOTS OR BALLET FLATS?
Boots. I’m a boots gal. Easy. You can wear them in different weather, especially in Melbourne. And they can give you height… which is good because I’m vertically challenged.
TUCKED OR UNTUCKED?
Untucked. It’s easier. What you see is what you get. With an untucked shirt, nothing’s hidden away – it is what it is.
IF YOU HAD TO WEAR ONE OUTFIT FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE IT WOULD BE…
My pyjamas. It really would. I guess that doesn’t really take into account having to go to work or anything like that, but I would choose comfort for the rest of my life.
Potter. Ceramics Teacher. Clay entrepreneur and craft evangelist. You might know Guy Vadas as Pottery Boy, but there’s more to this creative than mud. We asked Guy about style, craftsmanship and how his tastes have changed over time.
SNEAKERS OR BOOTS?
Boots. I used to be a sneaker guy, though. Now, a boot guy. It’s just an age thing, I think. I’ve now got much more of an appreciation for, like, leather work and craftsmanship, and you get less of that in the sneaker world and more of it in the boot world.
WOULD YOU RATHER BE OVERDRESSED OR UNDERDRESSED FOR AN OCCASION?
Overdressed! I used to definitely want to be kind of like cool a bit more low key. But now I really enjoy dressing well and like taking the time, especially if I’m going to an event.
SINGLE OR DOUBLE DENIM?
I think triple! Denim jeans, jacket, shirt. Could even get like a denim shoe or something in? Quadruple!
THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Functional. Well tailored. (Yes that counts as three words)
Artist. Maker. Writer. Twin mum. Bella McGoldrick is a lot of things, but boring isn’t one of them. This all‑round creative packs more making into her week than most people do into a lifetime. Bella tells us about her inspirations, favourite places and what fuels her creative spirit.
WHERE’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD?
Mexico and Italy. I actually feel like there are similarities between them. The landscape, especially out of the cities, can be quite similar and like rugged and old. And New York! It’s beyond, in a way, the best city in the world.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE WEARING MOST?
I do love any sort of an event. I like to dress up. A dress and a handbag. Oh, and a jacket! I live in Byron, but whenever it gets the tiniest bit colder, I’m like, ‘I’m wearing my jacket!’
WHAT IS FASHION ABOUT FOR YOU?
I’m a total maximalist. I love to have lots of options in my closet, for if you want to go from like feeling a little punk to like a little ethereal and whimsical. I think fashion should be fun. The same way I feel about jewellery and tattoos and makeup. It’s all just like playing dress up.
