Emma Stenhouse is an emerging Indigenous Artist on a journey to belonging and becoming more connected with her Ngarrindjeri heritage. Her work is predominantly inspired by nature and connection to country, using elements of contemporary art and traditional iconography. Each piece is braided with learning, a connection between artist and viewer and a continuation of culture, creating a platform for cross-cultural exchange. Growing up in Broken Hill, Outback New South Wales, Emma has a depth of connection to the arid lands of the bush. This is often evident in her use of colours inspired by the red dirt, and the simple concept of nurturing nature to continue its growth and sustainability.
The Artwork's Story as told by Emma
Blue Meeting Place
On the shores of the Southern Ocean, they come to meet. It is their place they call home. Mountains either side are parted by the meeting place, and coloured in the calmness of the sometimes-wild seas. This is a special place to come together to share and nurture, to embrace the energy of the ocean and each other. Bare feet in the sand, hands gently clasped within others, they share with us the stories of their place. Its stories, roll in like the waves on the sea, as we stand together, they become part of us. We are protected and embraced by the land and the sea, and by each other.
Emma is a proud Ngarrindjeri woman, with strong links to the Gunditjmara people of Warrnambool. She would like to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land where her artwork was created, the Peek Whuurrong people of the Marr Nation, and pay her respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
